“Johnston’s sculpture presents a positive view of humanity akin to the classical masters. His figures display finely modeled surfaces with well-defined musculature and clear anatomical structure. Yet they incorporate a fresh, modern quality of design that speaks to the present.”
~ Rolly T. Strauss, editor Sculptors International magazine
Barry Johnston’s work offers a unique approach to figurative art: with a timeless attention to excellence in detail and perspective, a masterful understanding of human anatomy and emotional expression, and a wholly modern sense of composition and balance. Art critics and historians agree that Johnston’s work will stand the test of time.
Johnston has been a sculptor’s sculptor from his early career to the present, receiving numerous awards from his peers. Many contemporary sculptors have been inspired by his groundbreaking release from the confines of gravity, and many young sculptors have been fortunate to study in residence with the artist in his studio. He established the Art for Humanity Foundation, which sponsored annual live competitions in New York City, awarding young sculptors of promise for many years until the mantel was passed to the National Sculpture Society, which continues the annual competition. It’s an excellent opportunity for young artists to meet accomplished judges and ask questions.
