Although Johnston’s main medium is modeling in clay to cast his art in bronze, he has created six classic works from marble. In his youth, the artist realized a few of his visions in limestone and alabaster, which prepared him for working in marble; and he studied further in Italy.
Donatello, Michelangelo, and other masters in stone carving had apprentices to help them rough out with chisels, especially to help with the time-consuming sanding of the artists’ creations down to a polish. Only a few of Johnston’s students have shown an interest in learning the art of carving; mostly, aspiring young sculptors come to his studio to study the art of modeling figures in clay.
