BIOGRAPHICAL PROFILE

Barry Woods Johnston dedicated himself to sculpture after earning a B.S. in Architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1969. He studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design and the Enzo Cardini and Romanelli Studios in Florence, Italy.

Mr. Johnston began his career in Washington, D.C., where he created the acclaimed "Wedlock," a 19½ ft. bronze for Lafayette Centre. In 1989, he established a studio in Baltimore, MD equipped for commissions several times life-size, with live-in space for students. More recent commissions include Faith, Hope and Love an 8¼ ft. garden fountain centerpiece in Bellevue, WA; two life-size bronze figures The Good Samaritan for the Govan's Church Park in Baltimore; Joy, a 6½ ft. sculpture for a hospital in Arkansas; and "Mother Teresa" a 5 ft. x 5 ft. bronze and granite panel for Notre Dame College.

Admired by his peers, Mr. Johnston has received numerous honors and juried awards including the National Arts Club "President’s Award," the National Sculpture Society’s "Lindsay Morris Memorial Award," the Allied Artists of America "Leonard J. Meiselman Award," and the Audubon Artists "Gold Medal of Honor."

Barry Woods Johnston brings to his work a daring imagination. Subjects are derived from religion, mythology, literature, and contemporary dilemmas. Mr. Johnston is known for capturing energized form and anatomy in motion with robust, gravity-defying figures. His sculptures are classical in anatomical realism and thoroughly modern in energy and compositional design. Both his work and he himself are uniquely creative and vibrant.
