ORPHEUS AND THE UNDERWORLD

Orpheus and the Underworld

Orpheus, Greek god of music, fell in love with a mortal, Eurydice, who died and went into the underworld ruled by Hades. Orpheus followed her and charmed Hades with his flute music, negotiating her release. Hades agreed on one condition: that Orpheus not look back. It was a long arduous journey and Orpheus led the way. Once he reached safety, unable to restrain himself any longer, he turned around to make sure she was safe. Tragically, Eurydice was not fully out and was pulled back into the underworld, lost to Orpheus forever.
