MARTIN LUTHER
Luther challenged the Roman Catholic Church by translating the Bible into the language of his people, by rejecting the idea of indulgences, by encouraging singing in churches, and by removing the ban on marriage for the clergy. He taught that eternal life was not earned by good deeds, but by the free gift of God’s grace through Jesus. He nailed his Ninety-five Theses on the door of churches in Wittenburg, Germany, launching the Protestant Reformation in 1517.
